If you lost your text file and you had edited it before by gedit (and also you haven't unmarked creating backup file in Edit>Preferences>Editor) you can restore your damaged/deleted file by looking for a file named `your_file_name`.txt~. You are not able to see this file in common GUI, so you can find it by writing the 'ls' command in the current directory.
These files that ends with Tilde (~) are created as backup or temporary and are usually hidden.
